Measure the 1 5/16” dowel to length using a tape measure, mark the dowel at 12”

Cut the dowel to length using a mitre box and a backsaw.

Mark the centre of the 4x4 post cap (this will be the base) and the 12” piece of dowel.

Drill through the centre of the base piece using a 1/8” drill bit. Drill a hole into the end of the dowel to a depth of 1”.

Lightly sand the base piece, taking off any imperfections or sharp edges. Sand the top end of the dowel, rounding the edges.

Paint or stain the two pieces as desired.

Screw the two pieces together using a 3” #8 wood screw.
